The Company

HELIOS was founded by Professor Edna Shaviv, Dr. Abraham Yezioro and Dr. I. Guedi Capeluto to help promote the idea of building with the environment instead of against it.

“We believe that bio-climate, solar and low energy building design are important factors that should influence the design of buildings and their surroundings. Our premise is that we can achieve thermal comfort without using so much energy and without compromising the aesthetics of the buildings.”

Using our own self developed computer-aided design tools, Helios provides consulting services to architects' offices, government offices, public and private bodies for the environmentally conscious design of buildings, urban spaces, and new materials.

This includes:

·                                       Strategies for Bio-Climatic design

·                                       Energy Conservation in Buildings

·                                       Passive Solar Design

·                                       Green Architecture

·                                       Bio-Climatic design of open spaces

·                                       Mutual shading among buildings and on open spaces (solar rights)

·                                       Maximum available volume to build without violating solar rights

·                                       Proper design of sunshades for windows

·                                       Natural ventilation of the building and open spaces

·                                       Natural and artificial illumination

Development of Methods, Models and CAD Tools

·        SUNSHADES - Determining the Form of Fixed & Movable Sun-Shades.

·        ENERGY - simulating and predicting the Thermal Performance of Buildings.

·        SOLAR_RIGHTS - Solar Rights Determination.

·        SHADING - Evaluating Mutual Shading Among Buildings.

·        MULRES-ENERGY - Determining the Optimum Configuration of Multifamily    Residential Buildings.

·        PASYS - Design Strategies for Passive Solar Systems.

·        SUSTARC - Modeling the Design & Evaluation of Sustainable Architecture.

·        FROMDXF: - Linking DXF files and SHADING.

·        BDA-RADIANCE - Linking Building Design Advisor and RADIANCE (LBL).

HELIOS is jointly owned by the Technion   R&D Foundation Ltd and by the group of founders.

 Selected Recent Consulting Works

As Technion professors and lecturers, we conduct basic and applied. Part of the duty of being in the academy is to pass this knowledge to practitioners to help them improve their own projects. Helios recent projects are on different scale:

Selected Recent Research Works

We have founded the national laboratory "Climate and Energy in Architecture", sponsored by the ministry of Energy and Infrastructures and we have carried research works for different Governmental Offices in Israel. Some recent works are:

·      Kyoto Protocol for "Reducing greenhouse gas emissions" - Israel policy. Ordered by: The Ministry of the Environment.

·      A New Energy Code for Buildings in Israel. Ordered by: The Ministry of the Environment.

·      Climatic and Energy Aspects of Urban Design in Hot-Humid Region of Israel. Including: Principles for Climatic and Energy Design. Determination of Design Strategies. Recommendations for the Urban Tissue, Square, Block, and Street. Ordered by: The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructures.

·      Climatic and Energy Conscious Design Guidelines for Residential Buildings in the different Climatic Zones of Israel. Ordered by: The Ministry of Housing.

·        urban design

·    South Entrance to BeerSheva: Theme Park and Shopping Mall. Ordered by the Developer.

·    Holyland Complex Hotel and Residential Towers, Jerusalem. Ordered by private bodies.

·    Marina Hotel and its surrounding, Ashdod. Ordered by the Developer.

·    New project for the Old Parliament Building and its surrounding, Jerusalem. Ordered by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

·        buildings

·    The Department of Energy and Environment. Weizmann Institute of Science. Ordered by the Construction & Physical Plant Maintenance Division.

·    "Achuzat Bait" A Tower Building Including Offices and Apartments, Tel Aviv . Ordered by the Developer.

·        new passive solar systems and materials

·    The Administration Bldg. Weizmann Institute, Rehovot. Shading Devices. Ordered by the Construction & Physical Plant Maintenance Division.
